Plantain chips, a tasty snack made with 4 ingredients: plantains, olive oil, salt, and black pepper. They are absolutely delicious!

Fruit and nuts are my go-to snack on a daily basis, but sometimes I feel like eating something different. That's why I decided to make these plantain chips, which are deliciously flavorful, healthy, and easy to prepare!

This is a traditional Latin-American popular snack. However, the original version of this recipe is made with fried plantains, but I decided to bake them this time, as they are much healthier and full of flavor too.

Besides, you can customize them with spices like paprika, cayenne powder, or ground cumin, and also with dried herbs, such as oregano, thyme, or parsley.

Homemade plantain chips, a healthy snack made with 4 simple and easy-to-find ingredients. They are great to eat on the go and perfect for the whole family to enjoy!

How to make plantain chips - Step by step

Step-by-step photos of how to make plantain chips
  • Preheat the oven to 375ºF or 190ºC.
  • Peel the plantains and slice them with a sharp knife or a mandolin slicer, add the plantain slices and the oil to a mixing bowl (photo 1), and toss (photo 2).
  • Place the plantain slices onto a lined baking sheet (photo 3) and bake for 25 minutes for one side and 5-10 minutes for the other side.
  • Remove from the oven, add salt and pepper, and stir until well combined (photo 4).
  • Enjoy your plantain chips hot or at room temperature.

Pro tips

  • You really need to use green plantains (unripe) to make this recipe, not regular bananas, as regular bananas have a different texture and are much sweeter than plantains.
  • Feel free to add any spices or dried or fresh herbs you'd like. Omit the black pepper if you don't like it.
  • You can use any type of salt, such as sea salt.
  • You could also fry the plantain chips in a pan until golden brown, but I prefer to bake them as they’re healthier this way. I promise they turn out as crisp!
  • If you fry them, I suggest you place them onto a plate previously covered with paper towels so they absorb the excess oil.

Are plantain chips healthy?

They absolutely are! This homemade version is much healthier than the store-bought ones, as it's only made with plantains, extra virgin olive oil, salt, and black pepper. And they are not fried!

Making your own snacks at home is a great way to control what ingredients they contain and also to customize them to taste. Besides, homemade food is usually more inexpensive.

How long will these plantain chips last?

Although it's best to eat them immediately or a few hours after making them if you have leftovers you can keep them in an airtight container in the fridge for about 3 days.

How to eat plantain chips

Plantain chips taste great with things like guacamole, pineapple salsa, or mango salsa. However, you can also eat them plain or serve them with your favorite dishes or ingredients!

Hi Daniela! Thank you so much ๐Ÿ™‚ You can't eat plantains without cooking them, they're too hard and don't taste good when they're raw. I've found this in Portuguese, hope it helps: https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musa_%C3%97_paradisiaca

Does the plantain need to be ripe? or does it matter? We usually get a plantain and wait until it turns dark before pan frying it.
