Golden milk, a super nutritious and healthy drink, made with 5 ingredients in 5 minutes. It's so comforting, soothing, and tastes amazing!

Photo of a mug with golden milk on the inside

Golden milk, also known as turmeric milk, is a super healthy and nutritious beverage perfect to enjoy on a cold winter evening. It's comforting and delicious and it's made with dairy-free milk, turmeric, and a few other simple ingredients. It's out of this world!

It has so many healing properties and it's loaded with lots of antioxidants. Some of the benefits of turmeric are that it can improve memory, lower blood sugar levels, reduce inflammation and joint pain, boost the immune system, and fight infections, among others.

To make this beverage I added some ground ginger, black pepper (which enhances turmeric absorption by up to 2,000%!), and vanilla extract. I like my golden milk better with all these ingredients, although they are totally optional.

Enjoy this amazing drink before bed, for breakfast, or even as a snack. It's so warm, soothing, and delicious, and it has so many health benefits. It's very easy to make and only requires one pot!

How to make golden milk - Step by step

2 shots of how to make golden milk step by step
  • Add all the ingredients to a small saucepan (photo 1), stir until well combined (photo 2), and cook over medium heat until hot (about 3-5 minutes) Stir occasionally.
  • Serve your golden milk immediately or reheat on the stovetop or microwave until warm enough.

Pro tips

  • If it's your first time trying this recipe, I would add ยผ or ยฝ teaspoon of ground turmeric, then try it and add more if needed.
  • Some recipes call for coconut oil, but I don’t think you need to use it. That way, it will be healthier and lower in fat.
  • If you'd like it to be creamier, feel free to blend it.
  • For it to be even more flavorful, let it simmer for about 10 minutes before serving.
  • You could also use ginger root and turmeric root instead. However, remember to use a strainer before serving.
  • I used soy milk, but this golden milk recipe can also be prepared with rice milk or almond milk.
  • Although sweetener is optional and you don't have to incorporate it into your golden milk, it will taste better if you do.
  • Feel free to use any kind of sweetener.
  • Ground black pepper enhances turmeric's properties and absorption, but you can omit it if you don't like how it tastes.
  • Incorporate, change, or replace all the spices you want. I sometimes add a dash of cardamom too.
  • I'd recommend you make your own vanilla extract at home, as it's healthier and more affordable.
  • Although to make this golden milk recipe I've used ground cinnamon, you could also use a cinnamon stick instead. Just remember to remove it before serving.

What is golden milk?

Golden milk is a beverage originally from India made with turmeric, cinnamon, and other soothing and flavorful spices. Enjoy it as a delicious treat in the morning or before bed!

Golden milk benefits

Some of the most known benefits of golden milk are that it has anti-inflammatory properties thanks to curcumin, one of the compounds of turmeric.

How long will my golden milk keep?

Keep the leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Reheat on the stovetop or microwave until warm enough.

    Hi Iosune

I just made this, it's amazing! Used grated ginger and honey, can imagine the vanilla would be good too so shall make some of that for next time. Definitely could become my new nightcap, thanks!

I don't know if I did something wrong but I followed the recipe exactly and mine is not sweet at all. It's fairly bitter actually. Any hints on what I might be doing wrong? I ended up using honey instead of the syrup, I don't know if that made a difference. I really want to enjoy this lol. Maybe I just don't like turmeric? LOL

Hi Autumn! What kind of milk you used? Honey is sweet enough, but you could try to add less turmeric next time or just add more sweetener. Hope it helps!

Made this yesterday. Delicious. Pepper shouldn't be optional since it's what helps turmeric do its thing. Thanks.

Hi Alocasia! Thanks a lot ๐Ÿ™‚ Some people didn't like the taste of the black pepper, that's why it's optional. Have a nice day!

I love your blog but I agree with the poster about turmeric and black pepper. If you are going to extol the virtues of turmeric you can't make black pepper optional. It's misleading. The active ingredient of turmeric will be poorly absorbed without black pepper. So it's quite pointless to have turmeric unless you like the color! You may as well make it optional too!

Hi Ed! Some people make this recipe just because of the flavor, that's why the black pepper is optional as it usually tastes better without it ๐Ÿ™‚

Golden milk is best for winters as turmeric has numerous antibiotic properties other than fighting common cold.

Delicious!!! I used unsweetened vanilla almond milk and itโ€™s sooo good! A bit on the sweet side, so I may cut back in the maple syrup next time. Itโ€™s very warm and comforting on a wet winter day.
